Born 1967, UK, now based in Sydney, Australia. Largely a self-taught painter, Graham Brown is a graduate of the school of Architecture at Sydney University where the painters Lloyd Rees and Guy Warren taught him art history, and inspired him to study painting. The discipline of a design-based degree has been invaluable in his art practice. After moving to Western Australia in the early 1990s, he studied fine arts at Claremont College. He had several successful exhibitions of his paintings in well known Perth Galleries. Moving back to Sydney at the turn of the millennium, he has mostly concentrated on executing commissions rather than exhibiting, but looks forward to doing more gallery shows in the future.
Influences include Indian miniature painting (seen on many trips to India) and Russian icon painting. He enjoys exploring different styles, from the naive to the realistic. Recently he is teaching himself to paint in oils, using techniques used by the old masters, including glazing – the building up of an image with layers of translucent paint.
